[00:02:25] There are a lot of programs and products and things that are all powered using AI.

[00:02:37] I absolutely love using AI.

[00:02:40] In fact, when I first heard about ChatGPT, way back, gosh, it's probably been a couple years now, maybe a year now, when it first kind of hit the market,

[00:02:49] I tapped into it, and I discovered that there were some things that I could use it for to really help out my podcasting process.

[00:02:57] Some of those things were trying to figure out a really good episode title for each episode.

[00:03:03] Those are the things I really struggle with, and I use it as a tool to help me put those things together.

[00:03:11] I struggle with writing stuff.

[00:03:14] I can't write things to save my life.

[00:03:16] I was never a writing major, so typing, I can type just fine.

[00:03:20] It's just physically like writing these well-crafted emails or well-crafted show notes.

[00:03:27] I can't figure that stuff out very well.

[00:03:29] I could spend a whole entire day doing it, or I could have AI do it for me.

[00:03:34] Those are some examples of what I personally use AI for.

[00:03:39] And I actually love ChatGPT so much that I created my own GPTs, and I gave them to you for free in the previous episode.

[00:03:58] But like I said, AI has been a wonderful tool for creating podcast outlines and brainstorming ideas,

[00:04:06] and maybe even helping you write some basic things to go along with your podcast,

[00:04:10] things that you normally wouldn't be able to do.

[00:04:13] And that's where I think AI really, really shines.

[00:04:17] But we live in a world where everybody is trying to one-up each other on this whole AI explosion,

[00:04:24] this new AI frontier.

[00:04:27] The Terminators are watching.

[00:04:29] Here they come.

[00:04:29] And they are getting ready for us to just bow down to their wishes.

[00:04:33] It seems like everything we do now has got some kind of AI infused.

[00:04:37] If you go on social media and you see some drawn-out post,

[00:04:41] whether it's on LinkedIn or Facebook or wherever,

[00:04:43] and somebody has inserted a ton of emojis into the text,

[00:04:47] you know that was written by AI.

[00:04:49] And hey, I'm guilty myself.

[00:04:51] I use AI for writing stuff all the time.

[00:04:55] It's easier, it's faster,

[00:04:56] and they can craft something that sounds very, very well written out,

[00:05:01] things that I could never, ever think of.

[00:05:04] It writes things so perfectly, way better than I ever could.

[00:05:08] But with ChatGPT and a lot of these AI prompts,

[00:05:12] they're all based on you actually prompting it with information first.

[00:05:18] You got to feed it the information,

[00:05:19] and based on that information, it creates something for you.

[00:05:24] So technically, it's not actually creating the thing you want it to create.

[00:05:29] It's just taking the inputs that you have gave it,

[00:05:33] because you were the genius behind the actual topics that you're going to feed the chatbot,

[00:05:41] and you're going to tell it what you want to talk about.

[00:05:43] Like, I want to talk about this and this and that.

[00:05:46] Can you put something together?

[00:05:48] Or I need to write an email for this person talking about these three things,

[00:05:54] and it needs to be kind but serious,

[00:05:57] and I need to get to the point, and the point is this.

[00:06:00] Those are things that you came up with out of your own brain.

[00:06:04] ChatGPT is only going to just take those things you gave it

[00:06:07] and create something that's well written,

[00:06:09] that's something that I could never, ever write.

[00:06:12] So not that long ago,

[00:06:13] another podcaster introduced to me this new other AI platform by Google,

[00:06:20] which is entirely free as of right now,

[00:06:23] called Google Notebook LM.

[00:06:27] And since it's free,

[00:06:28] and since it's similar to all the other AI chat things out there,

[00:06:32] I was like, you know what?

[00:06:32] I'm going to give this thing a try

[00:06:34] and see what can it do compared to the current chat platforms I already use.

[00:06:40] Because what I really use AI for is to take my finished MP3 audio file,

[00:06:46] convert it into a text file,

[00:06:49] and then get that thing thrown into some chat bot

[00:06:52] that can figure out the best titles,

[00:06:54] the best description, show notes, timestamps,

[00:06:58] all your basic stuff that goes with creating a podcast,

[00:07:01] all the written content that goes with your actual podcast.

[00:07:06] That's what I use the chat bots for,

[00:07:09] and that is what I use AI for to create the podcast.

[00:07:12] So when I heard about the Google Notebook LM being very similar

[00:07:16] to the platforms I already use,

[00:07:19] I figured why not give this thing a try?

[00:07:21] After playing around with this Google Notebook LM for a few minutes,

[00:07:26] I realized it's kind of similar to what I have been using,

[00:07:30] but the outputs have been much, much different.

[00:07:34] And I've also noticed what it really does is it will take any form of content,

[00:07:40] say written text,

[00:07:41] a website,

[00:07:42] a link to a YouTube video that can be transcribed.

[00:07:46] So it can't be a YouTube video with music and background,

[00:07:50] which was kind of funny because a lot of my earlier YouTube videos that I've liked to create

[00:07:55] for the other channel have been vacation videos with merely like soundtrack music embedded throughout the video.

[00:08:02] Not a lot of dialogue.

[00:08:04] It wouldn't take those.

[00:08:05] So it only takes video that have pretty much like a transcript,

[00:08:09] like a talking head,

[00:08:10] like video kind of video.

[00:08:12] It'll take that.

[00:08:13] It'll take anything from like a website.

[00:08:16] Like you take your whole entire website,

[00:08:18] drop it in there,

[00:08:19] and it will basically give you an overview,

[00:08:22] a summary of what the thing was you gave it,

[00:08:25] what it was about,

[00:08:26] key points that were involved.

[00:08:28] Basically,

[00:08:29] it's almost as if it creates a book report for your book or your thing.

[00:08:35] You fed it,

[00:08:36] which I can see can come in handy.

[00:08:38] If you have this very long text document,

[00:08:41] say an essay or a book or something along those lines,

[00:08:45] or maybe a really long like YouTube seminar video,

[00:08:49] you drop it in there and you say,

[00:08:51] I want to know the key points from this lecture.

[00:08:54] And Google notebook LM will provide you those key talking points right there

[00:09:00] and tell you where they pulled them from.

[00:09:02] All right there.

[00:09:03] Now let you know that this Google notebook LM is in the experimental phase right now.

[00:09:09] It is free to use with anybody who has a Google Gmail account.

[00:09:13] You can set it up for free,

[00:09:15] start playing around with it right now for free.

[00:09:18] But like with anything Google creates,

[00:09:21] they couldn't kill it and get rid of it at any moment.

[00:09:24] We don't know.

[00:09:26] So there's that.

[00:09:28] But when I was playing around with it some more,

[00:09:31] I discovered probably the craziest thing that Google notebook LM can do.

[00:09:38] And it is opening the eyes of all the podcasters out in the podcasting community.

[00:09:45] Everybody's up in arms because this Google AI notebook LM can create fake podcasts.

[00:09:56] And what I mean by fake podcasts,

[00:09:58] I'm talking a podcast that sounds like two people are having a regular podcast banter

[00:10:06] going back and forth discussing whatever content you feed it.

[00:10:11] And it sounds, well, it sounds pretty good.

[00:10:15] And with any of these kind of tools,

[00:10:17] we open the dangers of not being too authentic at all

[00:10:21] and creating a flood of all of these fake AI generated podcasts.

[00:10:28] Actually, right now as I record this,

[00:10:31] what is it?

[00:10:32] Listen Notes has been really pissed off

[00:10:35] that all of these fake podcasts have flooded their system.

[00:10:39] They went after them.

[00:10:41] They designed a tool that will actually hunt down

[00:10:44] and remove an AI generated podcast,

[00:10:48] especially ones that were created using Google's notebook LM.

[00:10:53] And they have hunted them down and they've flagged them

[00:10:56] and they put an entire list together.

[00:10:58] So as of right now,

[00:10:59] that list sits at over 1200 different podcasts,

[00:11:05] excuse me, 1200 different fake podcasts

[00:11:09] that have been created and put together

[00:11:12] and have actually been out there using this Google Notebook LM.

[00:11:17] Now the Google Notebook LM podcast,

[00:11:21] it's kind of funny because it's a male and a female

[00:11:25] with the same voices.

[00:11:28] And every single Google LM podcast that you will ever hear

[00:11:32] will be using the exact same people.

[00:11:35] Google's LM notebook thing does not let you choose different voices.

[00:11:40] It's already set.

[00:11:41] It's preset.

[00:11:42] And in fact, when you give it the information,

[00:11:45] you do not have a choice on what it says about your information.

[00:11:50] It creates the podcast all by itself,

[00:11:53] completely generated by AI.

[00:11:55] So if you decide to just drop in whatever you want in there,

[00:12:00] whether it's a YouTube video,

[00:12:01] some fake text you had AI write you in the first place,

[00:12:04] you can put it into Google Notebook LM

[00:12:07] and it will spit out an entire podcast episode with two co-hosts.

[00:12:12] These co-hosts, they don't have any names,

[00:12:15] but once you hear them,

[00:12:17] you'll recognize their voices over and over again,

[00:12:19] especially with all of these, what, 1200 now fake podcasts.

[00:12:24] By the time this episode goes live,

[00:12:26] it could be 2000 podcasts that are out there

[00:12:28] using this very same tool.

[00:12:30] So to tell you, or should I say show you what I'm talking about,

[00:12:34] I ran some of my stuff right through this chat bot,

[00:12:39] new podcast creating machine at Google.

[00:12:42] And the first audio clip I have is the podcast discussing

[00:12:48] what I've said in a YouTube video,

[00:12:50] talking about my podcasting journey.

[00:12:52] Check this out.

[00:12:54] By 2019, he had spent a good decade as a dedicated listener,

[00:12:58] basically watching podcasting evolve right in front of him.

[00:13:01] He was more than ready to throw his own hat in the ring.

[00:13:04] But how did he even begin?

[00:13:06] It seems like a huge jump going from listener to creator.

[00:13:10] It is.

[00:13:11] At first, Chris thought it'd be as simple as copying those radio shows he loved.

[00:13:14] You know, get some basic equipment, have some fun,

[00:13:16] don't overthink it, the classic of right.

[00:13:18] Just jump in and figure it out along the way, right?

[00:13:20] Sometimes that's the best way to start.

[00:13:21] Exactly.

[00:13:22] And that's what he did.

[00:13:23] Little did he know that 2020 would, well, shake things up a bit,

[00:13:27] both for the podcasting world and his own journey.

[00:13:29] Ah, yes.

[00:13:30] 2020, the year that changed, well, everything.

[00:13:32] And that includes podcasting.

[00:13:34] Suddenly everyone's stuck at home, desperate for some connection,

[00:13:36] and boom, the podcasting boom begins.

[00:13:39] Now, if I didn't tell you that was AI, it would be very hard for somebody,

[00:13:45] the average person, to say, like, that's not AI.

[00:13:49] That sounds like a regular podcast.

[00:13:51] It sounds pretty real.

[00:13:53] So then I had them look over my Podtastic Audio website,

[00:14:01] and this is what they had to say about that.

[00:14:05] One thing I noticed, too, is that they had a ton of great listener reviews.

[00:14:08] They do, yeah.

[00:14:09] Which, like, just goes to show that people are really finding value in what they're doing.

[00:14:14] For sure.

[00:14:14] And it's not just about the technical stuff, either.

[00:14:16] What else?

[00:14:17] They talk about audience growth, monetization, like the whole nine yards.

[00:14:20] Really is like the A to Z.

[00:14:22] It is, yeah.

[00:14:23] It really feels like they're saying, hey, we're indie podcasters, too,

[00:14:26] and we want to help you succeed.

[00:14:28] Yeah, absolutely.

[00:14:29] So if you had to pick one big takeaway from all of the stuff that they're talking about

[00:14:33] on Podtastic Audio, what would you say it is?

[00:14:37] You know, for me, it's that creating a great podcast

[00:14:40] is less about fancy equipment and more about passion.

[00:14:44] Now, some of the things that everybody is talking about

[00:14:48] when it comes to these fake AI-generated podcasts

[00:14:51] is that they have no personality.

[00:14:53] They have no emotion.

[00:14:54] They have no, like, you cannot connect as an individual.

[00:14:58] individual to the actual podcast.

[00:15:00] Maybe you can.

[00:15:01] If you didn't know that these were actually fake AI-created creations,

[00:15:07] just pull that out of thin air.

[00:15:08] These people do not exist.

[00:15:10] They are not real.

[00:15:12] They are completely fabricated out of an AI computer or however it works.

[00:15:16] Listen, I don't work for Google.

[00:15:18] I'm not a genius when it comes to AI or software or creating any kind of code.

[00:15:23] I don't know any of that stuff.

[00:15:24] But I can tell you this much.

[00:15:26] These AI-created podcasts, they actually lack their emotional depth

[00:15:31] and the potential to maybe, you know, mislead listeners

[00:15:35] if you think they're actually real and you connect with them.

[00:15:39] Maybe even fall in love with them.

[00:15:40] That'd be crazy if that actually happened.

[00:15:42] So just for funsies, I decided to take the Listen Notes actual article

[00:15:48] that described the dangers of all of the AI robotic, you know,

[00:15:53] fake podcasts that have flooded their system.

[00:15:55] So I took that article, dropped it into Google Notebook LM

[00:16:00] to have the fake podcast make a podcast about their fake podcast

[00:16:06] and to see what it actually said.

[00:16:08] So check this out.

[00:16:10] And I'll be honest, the whole robotic voice thing already bugs me, even in ads.

[00:16:14] Oh, tell me about it.

[00:16:15] But you're saying the real issue is bigger than just like a few awkward pauses

[00:16:18] or weird pronunciations?

[00:16:20] Way bigger.

[00:16:21] This isn't just about AI podcasts being, you know, bad.

[00:16:24] Right.

[00:16:25] It's about the potential damage to the whole podcasting ecosystem.

[00:16:29] Okay, so let's unpack that.

[00:16:31] What are we really talking about here?

[00:16:32] Well, think about it this way.

[00:16:33] You're a podcaster, right?

[00:16:34] You've put your heart and soul into this show you're making.

[00:16:38] Hours of research, writing, recording, all that.

[00:16:41] Oh, tell me about it.

[00:16:42] Don't even get me started on the editing.

[00:16:44] Yeah, exactly.

[00:16:45] It's a ton of work.

[00:16:46] And then your show, the one you poured yourself into,

[00:16:49] it basically gets buried under a mountain of AI-generated stuff.

[00:16:53] Stuff that probably took, what, an afternoon to make?

[00:16:56] So like the Mr. Fake Podcaster himself said,

[00:17:00] there will be a giant flood of all these fake shows hit the market.

[00:17:06] So how do you make sure your show truly stands out?

[00:17:10] Well, I guess it goes back to the basics.

[00:17:14] It goes back to you being absolutely real and unfiltered

[00:17:19] and maybe not as quite polished.

[00:17:21] And maybe even bust out that Blue Yeti microphone

[00:17:24] and use it in the bathroom 10 feet away

[00:17:26] and get that really raw, you know, indie podcaster sound

[00:17:31] that I've tried to steer away from

[00:17:34] and try to get as polished as possible.

[00:17:36] But now it's kind of hard

[00:17:38] because the polished podcasts are now the fake ones.

[00:17:42] So how do you stand apart from the fake shows that are out there?

[00:17:46] Well, one thing is for sure.

[00:17:49] If you're going to create some kind of fake podcast,

[00:17:51] whether it's an intro or maybe do some kind of samples like I did

[00:17:55] or whatever you want to do with it,

[00:17:57] maybe just alert somebody and say,

[00:18:00] this was created using AI.

[00:18:02] I know if you're on Instagram

[00:18:04] and if you post anything that has AI creation of any kind on it,

[00:18:09] especially an image or something like that,

[00:18:11] there's a little box that make you click.

[00:18:13] It says, was created by AI.

[00:18:14] You click the box and everybody's cool

[00:18:16] because if you don't do that,

[00:18:18] it can flag it, kick you off, all kinds of things.

[00:18:21] And now, Listen Notes,

[00:18:23] they're going in and hunting down all these fake podcasts.

[00:18:27] I don't know how they're doing it.

[00:18:29] Some kind of software,

[00:18:30] some kind of program they built.

[00:18:31] Maybe it's AI hunting down AI.

[00:18:33] It's like Terminator after Terminator.

[00:18:35] I don't know.

[00:18:35] But that's what they're doing right now.

[00:18:37] They're hunting these down.

[00:18:38] And once you hear these voices,

[00:18:40] like I said,

[00:18:41] every single podcast that uses this Google Notebook LM

[00:18:45] will be sounding exactly like these samples

[00:18:49] I played for you today.

[00:18:51] Once you hear these samples,

[00:18:53] you will not unhear these samples

[00:18:55] because if you hear a podcast or even a YouTube video,

[00:18:57] which I heard one today,

[00:18:59] using this exact thing,

[00:19:01] you'll know these are fake.

[00:19:03] They were created using Google Notebook LM.

[00:19:07] Now, to have a little fun with this robotic podcast machine,

[00:19:11] I have decided to take my podcast,

[00:19:16] throw it into there,

[00:19:17] and have it review my episode

[00:19:19] and come up with something.

[00:19:21] Then take that fake podcast

[00:19:23] and put it exclusively on my YouTube channel.

[00:20:01] and coming up with all of the amazing social media content

[00:20:05] or text content or any of those kind of things.

[00:20:08] It's just in an audio format

[00:20:10] with people that kind of sound like they're real,

[00:20:14] but they're really not.

[00:20:15] Is this the future of marketing?

[00:20:18] Having a fake podcast,

[00:20:19] like review your product

[00:20:21] and actually create the podcast

[00:20:23] based on your own thing,

[00:20:25] like an actual commercial?

[00:20:27] Maybe.

[00:20:28] Who knows?

[00:20:29] I think it's only going to get better.

[00:20:31] Now, like I said earlier,

[00:20:33] who knows if Google's actually going to keep this thing going?

[00:20:36] Maybe they'll cancel it.

[00:20:37] Who really knows?

[00:20:38] Who knows a Google over there?

[00:20:39] We don't really know.

[00:20:40] Remember Google Plus?

[00:20:42] Yeah, what happened to that?

[00:20:43] It's supposed to be the Facebook killer.

[00:20:44] Yeah, that died.

[00:20:45] Anyways, I think the fake Google Notebook LM podcast machine is pretty cool,

[00:20:51] but there are some problems.

[00:20:54] Like I said earlier,

[00:20:55] people will flood the market

[00:20:57] and try to get revenue and ad spots with their fake podcasts.

[00:21:01] And what happens is that our regular podcasts become just buried into the void of all the other fake podcasts out there.

[00:21:11] And thank you to Loosen Notes being able to like filter these things out and hunt down all these fake podcasts that are out there.

[00:21:18] And I think as time goes on,

[00:21:21] as you start to hear these particular voices on other different shows,

[00:21:26] so you click on a new podcast,

[00:21:27] you check it out,

[00:21:28] and you immediately hear those two voices,

[00:21:31] the AI podcasts,

[00:21:33] I would think lots of people will probably turn off those shows and not listen to another episode.

[00:21:39] I think at first they might get a few clicks,

[00:21:42] but once people realize that these are all fake and they're just fake shows,

[00:21:46] that they actually cannot connect with the hosts.

[00:21:50] The hosts are fake.

[00:21:52] You cannot connect with them on a personal level.

[00:21:54] There's probably somebody actually,

[00:21:56] you know,

[00:21:57] behind the scenes doing it all.

[00:21:59] Yeah,

[00:22:00] I get all that.

[00:22:00] But as a listener,

[00:22:03] you cannot connect with a fake robot.

[00:22:06] I've always said that audio podcasting especially is a very intimate,

[00:22:12] it's a very personal,

[00:22:14] it's a very one-on-one connection between you,

[00:22:17] the host,

[00:22:18] and the listener.

[00:22:19] You are right there in their brain.

[00:22:22] People listen to podcasts usually alone,

[00:22:26] not in a big giant group.

[00:22:27] It's not like a big giant movie theater.

[00:22:29] It's just you and me having a direct connection and a conversation that you get to hear.

[00:22:35] Like you are right here with me.

[00:22:37] We're just hanging out.

[00:22:39] The fake podcasts,

[00:22:41] although they sound very polished and they're very quick,

[00:22:45] the banter is very quick.

[00:22:46] That's one thing I've always noticed with these things.

[00:22:48] They finish each other's sentences so quickly.

[00:22:52] The very first time I actually heard it,

[00:22:53] I thought it was a regular podcast that somebody like over edited.

[00:22:57] They went super choppy choppy on the editing and they made things super,

[00:23:02] super quick because nobody actually talks that way when they're actually bantering back and forth.

[00:23:08] Some of them do,

[00:23:09] like some of those like morning radio shows that are super polished and super quick and super like,

[00:23:15] you know,

[00:23:16] bells and whistles and the morning zoo format.

[00:23:18] Some of those are like that,

[00:23:20] but that usually will last a few minutes.

[00:23:23] In between songs,

[00:23:24] they come in talking about some hot new celebrity that's dating some other hot new celebrity and something really quick.

[00:23:30] We're talking maybe a few minutes worth of dialogue back and forth.

[00:23:33] Boom,

[00:23:34] boom out onto the song.

[00:23:35] But to continue that for an entire podcast and to be so quick in the way they were talking,

[00:23:42] and they never ever go off topic.

[00:23:45] And one key giveaway with this whole Google LM podcast machine is that they always go into something that they like to call a deep dive.

[00:23:54] If they start off with,

[00:23:56] we're going on a deep dive,

[00:23:57] this is a deep dive,

[00:23:59] deep dive.

[00:24:00] My goodness.

[00:24:00] Hey,

[00:24:00] Google,

[00:24:01] if you're listening,

[00:24:01] because I know you are,

[00:24:03] please get rid of that deep dive jargon.

[00:24:06] And also,

[00:24:07] if you could,

[00:24:08] pretty please,

[00:24:09] give us options on our podcast robot host.

[00:24:13] If we can choose like a different type of voice or personality,

[00:24:17] then you can really mix things up and get really crazy.

[00:24:19] But as of right now,

[00:24:42] If you have your own podcast and you throw it in there and it is able to create a fake podcast based on your own voice and your guest voice and your host voice,

[00:24:56] That's where things start to become very scary.

[00:24:59] We already can do that stuff right now with things like 11 labs,

[00:25:03] but all 11 labs really does is it takes the script or the text that you already fed it.

[00:25:11] And it just reads that what Google notebook LM is doing is creating everything out of thin air,

[00:25:19] a dialogue,

[00:25:19] what they say and how they say it.

[00:25:22] It's all created right there in Google notebook LM.

[00:25:26] So Google,

[00:25:28] if you want to make this thing cool,

[00:25:29] maybe change it up a bit.

[00:25:34] I have to say that we probably should focus on creating amazing value and amazing content and delivering it in a fun and entertaining way.

[00:25:46] I say double down on the fun right now because the Google notebook podcast,

[00:25:51] although they had some cool little fun moments back and forth here and there,

[00:25:54] but you can really go beyond what they can possibly do because you are human and you have emotions and humor and talent that they do not have.

[00:26:07] tap into what makes you special.

[00:26:10] It's not all about the content.

[00:26:11] Sometimes content is great.

[00:26:13] I know content is king.

[00:26:14] They always say that,

[00:26:16] but your good content with your amazing personality is going to outshine the stupid AI robot podcast.
