BONUS EPISODE - If You're Sick, Take a Podcast Break

Hey fellow podcasters, I just wanted to drop a quick note about something that's been on my mind lately. As hobby podcasters, we often wear many hats and juggle multiple responsibilities alongside our passion for creating content. But it's crucial to remember that our health and well-being should always come first. So, if you find yourself under the weather and unable to record that new episode you promised, it's okay to take a break. Your audience will understand, and they'll appreciate your honesty and dedication to delivering quality content when you're at your best. So, don't be afraid to hit pause, take care of yourself, and come back stronger than ever when you're ready. We've got each other's backs in this community, and that includes supporting one another through the ups and downs of being a content creator.

Thanks so much for listening, I really appreciate it so much. If you need any help with your podcast, feel free to reach out. My email is podtasticaudio@gmail.com

[00:00:00] Hey, what is happening? How are you doing today? I want to say thank you so much for being

[00:00:07] here. I am Chris and this is the bonus edition episode of Podtastic Audio on these short little

[00:00:14] light bonus episodes. I deliver value directly to you, cutting out all the fluff, cutting

[00:00:20] out the intro music, the outro music, cutting all of that out. And I'm delivering value

[00:00:27] directly to you in a tight little tiny package. So this is the bonus round, baby. So last

[00:00:33] night I was having a conversation with another podcaster. In fact, he actually texted me last

[00:00:39] night having this little problem. Basically, the problem was is that he was not feeling very

[00:00:43] well. Listen, there's a sickness or an illness going around right now and Christine has been

[00:00:49] hit with it. And she's been down for the count for the last like two weeks. So we haven't

[00:00:54] released an episode in two weeks because she has not been feeling well and that is okay.

[00:00:59] But this other podcaster was not feeling very well either. And he was complaining that his

[00:01:03] voice was completely gone, that he couldn't record a podcast. And I said, hey, don't you

[00:01:09] usually just do interview shows anyways? It's a yeah, I do. I've got a whole bunch in the

[00:01:13] canal already. But he felt that because of his voice was just not there. He wasn't feeling

[00:01:20] well that he couldn't perform on his microphone to create that cool little intro vibe to his

[00:01:25] episode. And he was struggling with it because he was very worried that the guest that he

[00:01:31] had booked on the show would be upset that the episode didn't come out on the exact same

[00:01:35] day that he told his guest it would come out on now, whichever agreements that you come

[00:01:41] up with between you and your guest. I like to keep things extremely simple. Don't over

[00:01:48] complicate things because if you start over complicating things with it's going to be

[00:01:52] released on this day, this time guaranteed 100%. It's in stone. It's in writing and things

[00:02:00] come up or things happen unless you completely have like preloaded your podcast media host.

[00:02:07] I've never done this but I wonder if it's possible to pre-record all of your guest interviews.

[00:02:14] They did like 50 guest interviews over the last 50 weeks or whatever it is. And then

[00:02:20] you had all those episodes already edited and already done. If it's possible to just dump

[00:02:26] all of those into your podcast media host at one time and then you have them set to go

[00:02:32] out on certain dates. Now, it did not sound like he did that but he did pre-record all the

[00:02:38] interviews because that's kind of how you do it. You pre-record interviews. You put them

[00:02:42] on a folder somewhere in a hard drive and then you pull them out when it's time to release

[00:02:46] the episode. Now, the advice that I told him to do which he did not take is basically very

[00:02:53] simple. It's this just wait on releasing the episode until you are healthy to release

[00:03:01] the episode. It's okay. It is a hobby podcast after all. You are not getting paid by the

[00:03:10] guest to release the episode or by any company to release the episode. So why stress yourself

[00:03:17] out? Why worry about that because it's in the day. It's a hobby, but I know that a lot

[00:03:24] of any podcasters do not like calling it a hobby. They do not like we use the word hobby

[00:03:30] podcast. When you think of the word hobby podcast, it sounds like like you're planning with

[00:03:35] Legos or just toy. It's nothing really serious and this person takes his podcasting extremely

[00:03:41] serious. So you have somebody like that that takes his podcasting show extremely serious,

[00:03:47] although he's not getting paid to do it. He does not see it as a hobby. For most of us

[00:03:53] independent podcasters, this whole podcasting stuff is basically like a one man show that

[00:04:00] we do after work. After the kids go to school, after the kids go to bed, we have responsibilities

[00:04:08] and daily duties in this podcasting stuff usually happens after we do all of the things

[00:04:15] we have to do in our daily lives, which actually means this is a hobby. If it's not a hobby,

[00:04:22] it's a side hustle. It was not a side hustle. It's like a side project we're working on after

[00:04:28] we complete everything else. And it's okay to take a break every once in a while. It's

[00:04:33] okay to tell your audience, I'm not feeling well. I'm sick. I'm sorry. There's no episode

[00:04:39] out this week and they will understand because you are human and they are human. Something

[00:04:45] about podcasting actually has a human connection. There is a physical human element with audio

[00:04:52] podcasting that you're not going to get anywhere else. So what we've learned today is basically

[00:04:58] this is that it's okay to take a break and you should not ever make promises that you

[00:05:04] know you cannot keep. And if you have to break that promise, just explain things like I'm

[00:05:09] not feeling well, I'm sick, so on and so forth. There are so many guests out there. If

[00:05:16] you feel like this guest is going to get mad at you, what are they going to do? Not listen

[00:05:20] to your podcast or promote it. Well, chances are they may not do that anyways.

[00:05:25] Hey, listen, after all this is just a hobby unless it's a career and you're getting paid

[00:05:32] to do this. Are you getting paid to do this? Probably not. So remember to have fun and enjoy

[00:05:38] the ride of podcasting. This is supposed to be fun. It's not a job. You go to work to

[00:05:43] get paid. You go to work for your job. Podcasting should not be a job. It should be a fun

[00:05:48] thing you like to do. So until next time, happy podcasting.
